The Poisonwood Bible- Exodus and the End

The Poisonwood Bible ends with three books: Exodus , Song of the Three Children , and The Eyes in the Trees . Exodus  details how Orleanna left Kilanga with her three children, and how they eventually made it out of the Congo. Song of the Three Children  takes place several years after Exodus , and shows the perspectives of the three remaining Price girls and their lives. Finally, The Eyes in the Trees  is a short chapter from the perspective of something that watches over a forest in Kilanga, which is presumedly the ghost or spirit of Ruth May.  Nathaniel We hear about what happened after the rest of the Price family left Nathaniel from Leah. He wandered for a while, growing older and madder, and never gaining a following. He managed to survive for around two decades without the support of the family that took care of practically his every need. After multiples threats to baptize children in the river, the villagers of the town he is in decide to burn a watch tower ...

The Poisonwood Bible- Bel and the Serpent

Three major events happen in the fourth book of  The Poisonwood Bible ,  Bel and the Serpent . The first, which leads to unrest throughout the Congo, is the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. Between the uncertainty clouding the Congo's leadership and the drought which has persisted for months, tensions are extremely high. Due to the extreme lack of food in Kilanga, Tata Ndu organizes a mandatory village hunt, which divides the village and leads to fights for the meat afterwards. There is also a great quarrel over whether or not Leah should be allowed to hunt with the men, which results in even more outrage and an ominous warning from Tata Kuvudundu, whom is essentially a witch doctor. When the Price family returns home from the hunt, Nelson begs to be let inside instead of near the chicken coop where he fears a green mamba will be waiting for him (after Anatole woke up to one just beside his cot). After the girls help him lay a trap, they open the chicken coop in the early mor...

The Poisonwood Bible- The Judges

The third book of  The Poisonwood Bible , The Judges , is the longest book of the novel, and a lot happens; Leah fails to charm Anatole, Rachel gets thrown into a love triangle (against her will), Ruth May gets sick, and the village gets eaten by ants. We also learn why the novel is named The Poisonwood Bible  from Adah's perspective. When Nathaniel is giving his sermon, he declares that "Tata Jesus is bangala!" which means "Jesus is dear." However, he mispronounces it, making it sound like he is saying the word for poisonwood trees. To the Congolese listening he is preaching about poisonwood, meaning he is preaching the poisonwood bible. Nathaniel In my favorite chapter so far, we see (from Rachel's perspective) Brother Fowles, the minister who came before the Prices, have a conversation with Nathaniel. As Brother Fowles questions parts of the Reverend's outlook, Nathaniel attempts to disprove these questions with bible verses. However, Brother Fowles...

The Poisonwood Bible- The Revelation

In the second book of The Poisonwood Bible , the Price family continues to struggle through their time in the Congo, which becomes the Republic of Congo by the end of The Revelation  thanks to an independence movement. Because of this movement, the Underdowns, another family on a mission trip in the Congo tell the Price family that they will be leaving the Congo shortly. They live in Leopoldville, a town where wealthy white families live in luxury while the poor Congolese "make their homes out of sticks or tin or anything in the world they can find" (page 183). After the Underdowns tell the Price family that their funding is being pulled and that they will send a plane to take them out of the Congo, Nathaniel refuses to leave, condemning them to stay there for the foreseeable future. Reverend As the book goes on, it becomes increasingly difficult to sympathize with Nathaniel (the Reverend) Price. Throughout the second book, he takes several actions that hurt his family, which...
